You will probably looking at 16/32GB of RAM as the M series chips are much more efficient than Intel Macs when it comes to RAM usage.

the ports are not full thunderbolt3 spec). External GPU options are unlikely, it doesn't look like the M1 has the hardware support for them (i.e. The rumours seem to be talking about an M1X, which is an M1 with more CPU/GPU cores. It had never occurred to me previously to split processing between my desktop and laptop Macs because the MBP was so much slower. Yay! TBH, I didn't realize this benefit until after I'd already bought the mini and MBA. The M1 mini and MBA are both faster, and with two M1 Macs I can split the batch processing to finish the task in half the time.

That's why I bought a fire-breathing 2013 Mac Pro two years ago. My heavy lifting involves batch processing hundreds of RAWs on short deadlines for my event clients. My 13" MBA has proven capable enough for my on-the-go uses, including tethered portrait shoots into Lightroom, so I knew an entry-level $999 M1 MBA would be more than enough. I considered replacing my 2013 Mac Pro and 2017 13" MBP with an up-specced M1 13" MBP, but I realized that for just $400 more I could get an 8GB/256GB M1 MBA and a 16GB/512GB Mac mini. If the latter, you might consider my strategy - an entry-level laptop for location/travel use and a desktop Mac as the main machine with a large screen (two, actually) on my desk. But, do you really need a larger screen on the go, or are you planning to use it mainly on your desk?

What's your interest in a 16" MBP about? You said a 14" display would be too small. Presumably that is calendar, not fiscal, 3Q2021. This one says 3rd quarter 2021 for the M1 Macbook 16 and various other products. I am also quite sure that the M1 Pro will get many more cores and a different GPU bringing the design to dedicated GPU level.Īre rumor sites generally accurate for Apple? I am sure LG and Apple are busy working on these options. Additionally we'll see an all new iMac with new design and an iMac PRO with 31" display with miniLED and 6k

H2 2021 is realistic after the WWDC 2021 with the announcement of a MAC PRO with Apple chips.

  • M1 PRO or dual M1 configuration - the latter one is the least realistic oneĪdditionally we might get a M1 PRO MacBook Pro 14" as well with mini LED - the MBP 13.3" will fade out at some point in time - it has long been rumored that Apple will use mini LED displays.
  • option for an eGPU ( made in Cupertino? ).
  • new form factor / design - the current one gets a bit dated.
  • I guess we'll also see some further improvements and miniLED display. It simply doesn't make a lot of sense to have a setup with only 2x TB3 ports for a workhorse machine like in the current setup. I guess it will be an M1 PRO - in other words a more capable version of the current chip. Probably not until second half of 2021 before we see the m1 (or m2 by then?) 16" MacBook Pro. It's not as if a 17" laptop is non-portable. The latter will probably be greatly reduced. Small devices were great when people traveled more and commuted back and forth to work. To be clear, the rumor is that a 14" MBP would replace the 13" and complement the 16". I think a 14" Macbook would be too small for me, judging by the 15" Macbook I use now. If they're still releasing M1 products a year from now, they'll never make it to the Mac Pro in time. Why do I think the next up the line will be M2? Well, Apple has said it will take two years to transition the entire Mac line to Apple Silicon. If that happens, we could conceivably also see a bargain-priced 12" M1 MacBook replace the 13" MBA/MBP at the bottom of the laptop line.

I'm hoping we'll also get an M2 smaller MBP and mini with more ports. This timeline makes sense, but my guess is that it will be an M2 16" MBP alongside M2 iMacs.
